Language Barrier
Thursday, November 30th, 2006"Libertarian" Chuck Muth is upset because the Republicans will probably not push the English as Official Language Bill former Republican Congressional candidate Sharon Angle wants.
He says Spanish speaking options are OK for a private business, but not for government. After all, where do you draw the Line? Why not French speaking options? Or Farsi?
Chuck, what ever became of the Republican slogan of making government work like a business? (Not that it ever really could, because business doesn't work by forcing everyone to be its customers.)
A business, even in your example, doesn’t provide French and Farsi options on its normal business line because it does not have the market for it…except in Quebec, and Iran.
If a government jurisdiction has a large percentage of its population that does speak another language, why not provide at least some services routinely in that language that would apply to every “person” in its jurisdiction?
Once again, government is not a business. But, the job of government should be seen less in the light of making everyone fit into the same mold all the time, to serving the people. All the people. The choice of how much service to provide to minorities should be done democratically. Chuck apparantely would stop at zero when it comes to providing services in Spanish.
Does this mean we should change the name of our State? Isn’t Nevada a Spanish name? Maybe to something like “The State that wants you to gamble, and forget about the dishwasher in the back of the restaurant” State.
